you know why I like redemption narratives? because a redemption narrative says: no matter how broken or wrong or bad or stupid or ridiculous or harmful or sad or terrible, you can atone.
there is still a road back. it might be rocky and steep, complicated and messy. walking it may take all your life. you may lose your foothold, slip and fall back into the abyss, but the wall is still there. the ascent is still there. hard is not the same as impossible.
you are never too far gone. you are never beyond saving.
redemption arcs > black-and-white thinking
Redemption does not mean: no matter how wrong or bad or harmful or terrible you are, if you suffer enough then everybody will/should forgive you and love you and accept you.
Redemption means: no matter how wrong or bad or harmful or terrible you are, you can stop being that. you can be better.
(and yes, the process of making yourself be better will be arduous and painful, but the pain is not the point; the pain is not punishment; the pain is not there to make you pitiable and therefore forgivable. the pain is incidental. any pity anyone feels for you is also incidental. the point is to stop being terrible.)
i haven’t seen any noise about this on tumblr yet, but a fire has completely wiped out a small town in california.
they’re calling it the camp fire. over 20,000 residents have been evacuated so far, the last area estimates i heard were over an hour ago at 18,000 acres and its still zero percent contained.
this is the smoke from about 18 miles away from the fire three hours ago. if you know anyone near chico, paradise, oroville or durham california you might want to check they’re okay
UPDATE: 4PM FRI NOV. 9, 2018
the fire has completely walked over paradise, magalia, and much of the rest of butte county. it’s under 10% containment and moving towards chico, which was been mostly evacuated as well. it’s been documented as one of the top 20 deadliest fires seen in california. i know many of the people personally whose lives have been destroyed by this fire. my aunt and uncle’s home, of whom we’re very close to, was demolished last night, same goes for family friends and others who lived in paradise– which is completely gone. there are 5 confirmed deaths, several dozen missing people.
EVACUATION SITES STILL OPEN AS OF 1 HOUR AGO:
Butte County Fairgrounds (199 E Hazel St, Gridley, CA 95948)
Yuba-Sutter Fairground (442 Franklin Ave, Yuba City, CA 95991)
Glenn County Fairgrounds (221 E Yolo St, Orland, CA 95963)
Chester Memorial Hall (22 Gay Street, Chester)
HOW TO HELP/DONATE:
“Currently the best way to contribute is to make a monetary donation via the North Valley Community Foundation website.” -abc7news.com
“Supplies: Hope Center in Oroville (1950 Kitrick Ave Ste. A) is taking donations. Hours: Friday and Saturday 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Sunday 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Needs: warm clothes, shoes, socks, coats (primarily for elderly residents).” -abc7news.com
the majority of those affected by the fire in paradise were elderly people. and having known paradise and magalia myself for years, it’s not a wealthy part of california. these people will need help, and lots of it.
if you have any questions, you can message me personally or seek information online or from the above references personally.
if you cannot help yourself, please spread the word and reblog. so many wonderful people are going through a terrible thing and need your help.
uhh my secret is that i think im losing my artistic skill and its scaring me bc thats kind of my thing that people know me by and idk it kind of freaks me out that i cant seem to get out of this slump or improve at all. sorry if that was too deep.
Firs thing first: your worth is not based on your art. You are a human being with human feelings and a lot to give to the world wether it is with a pencil, or with a smile, or with a hug.
You’re worth the world.
But I know art is a form of love to the world and to oneself, and I can help you.
This video has daily excercises that will help you learn line economy and confidence, speed, shapes and perspective.
It will also teach you to not be hard on yourself when it comes to art and more importantly: it’ll make you draw.
And I don’t just mean discipline.
People worry during art slumps cos what they wanna draw doesn’t come out and thus, they don’t try drawing at all and it leads them to feel guilty about not drawing. It is a vice cycle. You push your way out of it, you can.
This will make you draw, it’ll teach you to forgive yourself and accept mistakes and since it’s a repetitive work, it will feed your muscle memory and these excercises will then become mechanical, they won’t require thinking.
Doing these will refresh you and revitalize you for taking drawing again. And the days they don’t, you still drew, because you did these. And that’s enough, too.
Whatever you draw is mileage. Every drawing counts.
Hey do y'all fucks remember two years ago when just before the election all these “don’t vote both parties are bad” or “vote independent!” Posts were going around and then Trump won and now two weeks before midterms there’s all these “don’t bother voting, revolution is the only way!” And “your vote isn’t gonna matter and is an ineffective way to protest” posts are going around? Yeah knock that shit right the fuck off, don’t fall for it and get your ass to the polls, we are not doing this again.
